Centre for Contemporary Arts, Nottingham (CCAN)

This contract included carrying out enabling works at Weekday Cross/Gardners Hill, Nottingham. The work was necessary to prepare the area for the construction of the new £13m Centre for Contemporary Arts. The confined site was sandwiched between High Pavement, Gardners Hill, the NET Tram viaduct and the Broadmarsh Shopping Centre. It was a particularly difficult site owing to its awkward shape and multi-layered levels, which fall sharply from High Pavement to Cliffe Road. NMC has completed works which include contiguous bored piles with the installation of temporary ground anchors and the temporary diversion of a twin high pressure district heating main to allow excavation. Existing levels were then reduced by 11m to the new formation levels. The site was also on an old cliff which is of archaeological interest as parts of the Nottingham caves were exposed. The City Archaeologist frequently visited the site and a number of features and artifacts were uncovered, recorded and preserved.

National Grid Sky Cradle Support Pads

An unusual task for the Division was the design and construction of the support pads for the National Grid’s Sky Cradle, which supported the Chesterfield to High Marnham 175kv overhead line over the M1 during refurbishment. The location was at the top of an 8 metre high embankment supporting the motorway and we organised a ground investigation and slip circle analysis to check the global stability of the embankments and obtain Highways Agency geotechnical certification. The construction of the gabion supports and pads was relatively straightforward, whilst working around telecomms services. However, the planning of the works, particulary for the removal and replacement of the vehicle restraint barriers several times was complex and required liasion with the police for the double rolling road closure of the M1 to enable the sky cradles to be installed safely.
